OAU Students Excel at National Debate Championship

A team of debaters from Obafemi Awolowo University triumphed at the National Debate Championship held in Lagos from June 25th to 28th. Competing against teams from 20 other universities, the OAU team demonstrated exceptional critical thinking, persuasive speaking, and teamwork, ultimately securing first place.

The championship, organized by the National Debating Council, featured multiple rounds of intense debates on current social, economic, and political issues. The OAU team’s winning arguments on topics such as climate change policy and digital privacy rights earned them high praise from the judges.

In addition to their victory, team members Fola Akinyemi and Grace Okonkwo received individual accolades for Best Debater and Best Speaker, respectively. Their success has brought pride to the university and highlighted the strength of OAU’s debate program, which emphasizes rigorous training, research skills, and public speaking.

The debaters’ achievement has sparked increased interest in the university’s debate club, with many students eager to join and participate in future competitions. This victory not only showcases the intellectual prowess of OAU students but also reinforces the university’s reputation for academic excellence and extracurricular success.
